“Interwoven composition” is the title of this artwork created by Mark Vennegoor. It was initially part of a larger installation and came into being after artistic research on our relation with clothing in the Netherlands and Guatemala. This exploration showed on one side the power of the market and (fashion) industry and on the other side the value of a relationship with material and makers. Interwoven composition reconditioned these elements in a visually dynamic work.
The physical work, which was exhibited in Switzerland, was meant as a tool for a real interaction with the audience. The visitors were invited to position themselves in the exhibition by taking pieces from the installation and changing the composition. By doing so they connected with the craftsmen of the pieces, but also with other visitors who were changing the composition. The work ultimately shows how everything is linked to each other, and celebrates this by cherishing the beautifulness of material and handwork. The idea of this website is to involve more people making more variations and intervene in the real world of the clothing industry.
Why the name DenimEconomics?
DenimEconomics has the aim to introduce a new economic theory. An economic philosophy based on alternative values, which wants to “repair” imbalances in current economic behaviour. The fashion industry is an industry that perfectly demonstrates the (in)ability of present economic theories. By appealing to the human power of beauty, aesthetics and harmony, this art project explores an alternative model for the fashion industry.
